WHAT IS POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER? What is post-traumatic stress disorder? Dr. Shira Maguen defines it as an anxiety disorder that may develop after an individual is exposed to one or more traumatic events.(Maguen 2008). In war situations military service members are exposed to many potential traumatic events. They could be put in life threatening danger or could be seriously injured. Witnessing a traumatic event such as a comrade being killed can also affect a service member. To be diagnosed with PTSD a person must also react with helplessness, fear, or horror after or during the traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD are categorized in four different types. The first one is reliving the traumatic event. This could involve flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts. The second type is avoidance. They tend to avoid things that remind them of the traumatic event whether it be people, places, or even emotions. The third type is emotional numbing. They may detach themselves from loved ones, or become less interested in activities that interested them before. The final type is increased arousal. This type is common in returning veterans. They may experience increased anger and irritability and difficulty sleeping. Other symptoms could include feeling jumpy or easily startled. In Voltaire’s Candide he satires religion and questions it because of how morally corrupt religious are and how wrong it is to persecute another person’s religion. Villa Savoye The Villa Savoye, a building designed by a Swiss architect named Le Corbusier, is located in the city of Poissy, France. The building was finished between the years 1929-1931. It is most known for a private weekend retreat about thirty miles outside of France. Le Corbusier believed that ornament had no place in the modern life world. The building structure is based of the International Style. Most forms of the International Style lack surface ornament and involve the use of modern, industrial materials. Le Corbusier said that the house should be used as a ‘machine for living. The building itself is surrounded by a forest and it looks like it is in the middle of nowhere. It is held up by pilotis, also known as columns, to lift off the ground to show the green grass more. There is also a rooftop terrace above the house that contains a garden. The walls of the Villa Sovoye are all white and the surface is really smooth it looks like. The white walls show me that it is a sign of cleanliness. From the pictures that show the inside of the house it looks like the house is too abstract because of all the elements that the house contains. Rectangle windows, cylinder columns, and other shapes with all plain white make it seem so abstract. There are two excerpts about this architectural building that each have their own aspect of the artwork. The first author, William J. R. Curtis, is most fascinated by the symmetry and shapes of the Villa Savoye. He talks about the building itself and not really the in depth details that the house acquires. The second author, Mark Wigley, finds the white walls of the house most significant. He talks about how much color has an effect on the way people look at things in the world in the modern day. Both authors show evidence making their argument about the Villa Savoye. William J. R. Curtis starts off giving a brief description of the Villa Savoye and the environment around the building. Shapes are one of the main topics that Curtis talks about. He mentions a cubic gate for the entrance of the driveway. Another shape reference is when he describes the house as a horizontal white box supported by pilotis. Symmetry is fascinating to Curtis as well. He talks about how the building is completely symmetrical in every aspect. Curtis finds the horizontal emphasis intriguing and how the main upper level windows glaze down to the lower level showing congruency. There is a square plan in the Villa Savoye that contains the central ramp and curvature of the drive that shows a symmetrical armature. Modern architecture is something that Curtis finds most interesting. He believes that the Villa Savoye might be related to Cubist paintings from looking at the illusions and transparencies of the building itself. Curtis’s view of the artwork varies in many ways from the next excerpt from Mark Wigley. Wigley’s views on the Villa Savoye building is all based on the white walls all over the house. He describes the walls as brilliant, delicious, and dazzling. Wigley says Le Corbusier uses the white from his own past usage of vernacular whitewash. The white walls show that the house is very clean and neat. He states that Le Corbusier may have painted these walls all white to show certain actions of his personal experiences. The whitewashed house was just about his experiences though. Wigley believes that Le Corbusier made it just for a social construction with its own past history and agenda. The white walls also show a sign of organization and pureness. When a couple goes on a retreat there for a weekend they do not want to see dark walls which may have a possible effect on their mood because black colors show a sign of depression. White brings out the best of everyone and it is a color that will not have a negative outcome. Curtis and Wigley both have points that agree and disagree. They both are intrigued by the way the house was built and the organization of it. Curtis liked how the rectangle windows and the pilotis raised the house up showing more of the environment around it rather than just the building. Wigley is similar describing how the white walls show off a sense of cleanliness and organization. There are a couple differences that the two excerpts have on each other. Curtis talks about shapes and how they have more of an effect on the way the building is perceived rather than Wigley’s view of just the white walls and how they can be looked at in many ways. Wigley does not really talk about anything outside the whitewashed wall like Curtis does. The strength of Curtis’s article is that he loved both the house and the nature surrounding the modern architecture building. Wigley lacked giving detail outside of the white walls of the Villa Savoye. A strength of Wigley was how he described Le Corbusier’s past experiences and tied it in with the white walls of the house. He gave the reader an in depth analysis of the white walls making the reader’s imagery increase. Curtis did not really get into Le Corbusier’s life and just talked about the horizontal aspects and the building’s texture. In conclusion, the authors’ arguments are persuasive. Evidence showed that their conclusions of their views of the Villa Savoye were supported. The information that they gave were very in depth in certain aspects. Curtis did an entire description of the house while Wigley did great detail on just the white walls. My own observations of the artwork confirmed both authors’ conclusions. I mentioned the white walls that Wigley found most significant and the rectangles and the environment surrounding the Villa Savoye like Curtis did.

Candy wishes to share in the dream with George and Lenny because he is becoming old and useless like his dog, he has nowhere to go to and now one to care about him and unlike his dog theyre not going to take him out and shoot him, instead there going to put him in an old folks home where he will feel lonely and have no freedom. By joining Lenny and George he can live out his days happy and free, forever safe knowing he wont be canned. Once Candy realises that the dream is more or less a reality he stands up for what he believes in with dignity and courage, something he didnt do before he realised the dream was within reach. Candy realises that he doesnt have to be the useless old cripple anymore because he can live the rest of his life happy, without being told what to do. Candys dream ended in a pessimistic way because all he wanted got destroyed leaving him with nothing and hence left in the same way he was before the dream- old, useless and hanging onto his job by a thread. Crooks dream was to be respected and not judged by his colour, he too wanted to live on the ranch with Candy, George and Lenny. Crooks is an example of the bitterness, anger and hopelessness that a black American struggling to be recognised as a human being is faced with. At first Crooks was most cynical about the dream of owning a ranch but the dream was powerful enough to convince him that it was the real thing for a few moments only to be shattered by Curleys wife who made it clear that there is no way a black, crippled outcast such as himself would ever make such a dream a reality. That statement that Curlys wife made, made Crooks realise that he was nothing more than an outcast and what she said was in a way true, with that all the hopes and dreams of Crooks were crushed. Like Crooks, Curleys wife is stricken with isolation and sadness. She was out of place on the ranch and because of that she was a really lonesome person with lonesome feelings and hence was often desperate for someone to talk to. Throughout the novel Curleys wife stirred up many emotions among the workers of the ranch, such as the way she looked and acted lead other characters in the novel to see her as a tart. Curlys wife indulged in a dream which had already passed her by, leaving her with a life of empty hope. Like many young women, she aspired to stardom in films after being wrongly told that she was a natural. At first she seemed cold hearted and set herself to make trouble but then it became apparent that she was just lonely adn wanted someone to talk to and as Curley was not interested in hearing about her hopes or dreams, the only person she found willing to listen to was Lenny.

In both mss I drew a wavy line under it to represent the shudder that the -ed past ending on this verb stirred in me. The principal parts of slink are slink/slunk/slunk.: Then I got to thinking about various verbs that rhyme with slink and realized that although slinked pushed my shudder button, I have no problem with winked. But even with rules in place, many people still fall victim to discrimination at workplaces. There have been numerous legislative movements to ban discrimination’s every shape. One of the most important act was Civil Rights of Act 1964 which outlawed and prohibited discrimination by covered employers on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national. International organizations such as International Labour Organization and United Nations have been setting their agendas by considering discrimination, especially discrimination in workplaces. While everyone is a potential victim; women, LGBT’s, ethnic minorities, migrants, persons with disabilities constitute majority of discrimination victims in workplaces. As a supporter of this argument, Human Development Report in 2011 revealed that 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti Hispanic attitudes towards their co-workers in U.S. Gaining independence from Spain in 1821, El Salvador’s more recent history has been marked by a bitter civil war in the 1980s which left more than 75,000 people dead and 500,000 displaced. The country was then hit by a series of natural disasters in the 1990s and 2000s, which left more than a million people homeless. These occurrences made the state impotent and unstabilized. Thus, Salvadoran authorities have not adopted the findings and recommendations made by UN and ILO bodies in the field of discrimination in workplaces between those years properly. But after 2000 to present, El Salvador has shown an incredible improvement to ban all forms of discrimination, especially during presidency of Carlos Mauricio Funes Cartagena. As a first step on this area on August 19, 1981, El Salvador ratified the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which defines discrimination and establishes an agenda for national action to end such discrimination. In 1996, prior to the Committees review of El Salvadors compliance with CEDAW, the government of El Salvador established the Institute for Development of Women. The Institute seeks to ensure that action plans created by the government to protect women are implemented effectively. Yet these amendments were not enough. Althoughwomen inEl Salvadorenjoy equal protection under the law, they were often at a disadvantage relative to their male counterpart according to Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in 2001.Also as indicated in Human Development Report the femalelabor force participation ratein El Salvador was 45.9 percent, compared to the male rate of 76.7 percent. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)persons inEl Salvadorhad been facing legal challenges in workplaces. The Secretariat for Social Inclusion, created in June 2009 by President Funes, who named the first lady Vanda Pignato as secretary, made efforts to overcome traditional bias in all these areas. The constitution provided for the right of workers. In 2009 the government amended the constitution to grant legal status to public worker unions. The law established sentences of one to three years in prison to person who discriminate in the workplace. There were no government programs dedicated to combating discrimination but now The Vida Digna (Life with Dignity) program has been adopted to El Salvador to fight against discrimination based on HIV. Also on the basis of sexual ori entation, in practice discrimination was widespread, especially against transgender persons. In January the new administration approved the legal registration application filed in August 2009 by the gay rights NGO Entre Amigos. This is the first NGO focused on sexual minorities registered by the government whose primary declared work was other than the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Although it’s considerable headway, El Salvador will not be satisfied with this arrangements and for sure, sanctions and regulations will improve gradually to reach international criteria. As clearly seen discrimination in workplaces is widespread in many countries. In our opinion, such systematic human rights violations can only be deterred by the humanly will of governments, employers and employees in taking resolute action against people who discriminate at all levels.

Theatre of the Absurd Essay. The Theatre of the Absurd originated from experimental Arts of the avant-garde in the 1920’s and 30’s. It highlighted the meaning of life and came about as a result of the Second World War. It was also a result of absurd plays having a highly unusual, innovative form, aiming to startle the viewers. In the Second World War, in the meaningless and godless post Second World War world, it was no longer possible to keep using traditional art forms and standards that had ceased being convincing. It openly rebelled against conventional theatre. It was very anti-theatre, coming across as surreal, senseless and plotless. Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter were known as the ‘absurd’ play writers. They both share the views that man inhabits a universe with which he is out of key. ‘Come and Go’ by Samuel Beckett is a very simplified; basic play based on three characters talking of the old days and their friendship. Beckett was born 13th April 1906 near Dublin. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for literature in 1969. ‘Black and White’ by Harold Pinter is the core of a minimalist set with very little communication between the characters. The play bases the two old women in a milk bar. It comes over as a plot less play with very little meaning. These two plays ‘Come and Go’ by Samuel Beckett and ‘Black and White’ by Harold Pinter both seem to carry very little meaning. On a surface level, both plays are short. ‘Black and White’ is a non-trusting play with evidence of emptiness. Both plays send out a message to the audience. This is shown particularly where there are silences throughout the plays. Theatrical techniques used in ‘Come and Go’, show at the start of the play, clearly how the... ...nce to finish the play, here the audience probably feel although the play is referring to an old friendship that maybe once hung about the three characters and they are bringing back memories between them. In the Theatre of the Absurd, the two plays ‘Come and Go’ by Samuel Beckett and ‘Black and White’ by Harold Pinter carry many similarities and differences. They are both plays which carry no meaning and characters have no identities. ‘Black and White’ is much longer than ‘Come and Go’. ‘Black and White’ is set in a more realistic modern way, of two women sat in a bar having a typical talk, watching the day go by. ‘Come and Go’ gives a more 1800’s feeling with the characters having 1800’s names and the setting being very abnormal to a normal more modern play. ‘Come and Go’ is a more atmospherically, tensional play with the characters being more active.

Over the past several years, hip-hop’s/music standing has been tumbling. Criticizers of the genre often arguably point at the extreme cursing, degradation of women, and adoration of the â€Å"gangsta† lifestyle as major flaw in rap songwriting. However, it is important that these characteristics only describe a small section of hip-hop. Most rap songs are actually very poetic, as they feature the rhythms and verses, poetic devices, and themes that are crucial elements of traditional poetry. Many rappers use the rhythms and rhyme schemes that are characteristic of poetry in their songwriting. Today’s generation expresses of love, death, self-expression, personal, political, and social issues, poverty and riches, and life involvements. They entwine these thoughts artistically and creatively within strong rhythms and captivating tunes that capture the minds of the listener. The mind-set of today’s adolescence can be found within the lyrics of the music that they listen to. Both rappers and poets write about the same subjects. For example the rap unit NWA, and the poet Alice Walker, both talk about the topic of being from a compression race. Alice Walker writes in one of her poems that â€Å"there is no planet stranger than the one Im from†. What she is saying is that the world is strange because people judge others by their skin color. The method NWA takes is a more arrogant one, but still expressive. In one of there most notorious the songs â€Å"Fuck Tha Police†, NWA says † Young nigga got it bad cuz im brown, And not the other color so police think, they have the authority to kill a minority†. Another common subject between poets and rappers is â€Å"ghetto life†. Allot of African American rapper and poets come from a life of struggle that they channel into their writing and poetry. When it comes to poets and rappers, the biggest similarities are their appeal to transfer a message. The substance may different, but the need to enduce an emotional response is the same. It’s naturally focused by their view of the world or society and craving to show their point-of-view. There is repeatedly the use of metaphors in poetry and rap to express their message and some are written that allows readers or listeners to make their own analysis. Song and poetry, They both express emotions or a message in some way, And they both use a very similar method. The difference between rap and poetry is really just the message and the type off message. You will never here Shakespeare talking about â€Å"bitches and hoes† and you will never hear a song from Tupac about â€Å"comparing thee to a summers day†. So really, there is no difference between the two beside the content. At times music is viewed adversely because of the strong language and ideas. Nevertheless, there is a message fixed within that gives voice to the brilliances and troubles of the surrounding society and community in where we live. The musicians of today reproduce and repeat the works of famous legendary poets past and present mentioning on some of the same political and social issues that are still applicable today. Once these poetic pieces are researched and explored, any one can determine whether the message is relevant and effects change, good or bad, for the listener. Using poetic plans and litraure, one could create expressive and perceptive poetry that reflects their personal thoughts and thoughts and beliefs of their generation, which is what’s being done in todays music. This has been done perfectly by Accomplished Rappers such as Public Enemy, Lauren Hill, Queen Latifah and Tupac Shakur. Almost every rapper puts his soul into his work. They rap about their own original verses with their own style and they say it with passion that connects with audience. Most rappers freestyles and songs are unique, but some take lyrics from other artist so not all rap/hip hop is creative. Rap/Hip Hop is a Poetic art form that came up on new york street corners and ghettos, to what it is now. Most old school raps were just poetry with a beat behind it that gave it a flow. Just people Talking about their lives, poverties, loves, hobbies, and of course its evolved into just raw emotion and whatever was on their minds. Some people use it to write down their genuine secrets or desires, instead of just keeping them inside, or to let out some form of emotion like love for one another, love for a woman, anger, heartbreak, this showed who those people really are/ or who they want to be, dreams of being larger than life. To Some people poetry is an expression of a dream that is condensed in a method comprehensible and enjoyable to others and so likely to arouse close emotions. For others it’s a written expression of emotion or ideas in an arrangement of verses most often rhythmically. How can hip hop not be reflected as poetry? Beat, rhymes, metaphors, similes, economical use of language to get a point across. all poetic devices, all used in hip hop. Some of the famous poet Robert Burns most well loved poems were originally written as songs, but they’re still loved as poems. Every poem can be a good melody but every melody can not be a poetry. Song is built on the group of musical voices that would lead the auditors to forget the environments and even himself where the poem is based on the expressive letters and words, that would proceed information to the readers and is spread through educated people. Songs are worldwide that anybody can enjoy but poetry is bound to be for the educated. Most rap songs are actually very poetic, as they feature the rhythms and verses, poetic devices, and themes that are crucial elements of traditional poetry.

Obama’s life story has taught him that a nation isn’t simply a sum of genetic make-ups.
